Port Ellen is arguably the most famous closed distillery. It was producing whisky from 1825 until the late 1920s, resumed production in 1967 after extensive restoration, only to close for good in 1983. Every year since 2001 Port Ellen single has been offered by Diageo as part of the prestigious Special Releases range and quickly sells out. In 2005 we welcomed the 5th Release comprising whisky distilled in 1979 and bottled at 57.4% abv with an outrun of 5280 bottles.
Nose: peaty with tarry and farmy notes, hay barn, wet straw, garden herbs, hints of camphor and aniseed, grapefruits and notes of salt and pepper.
Palate: quite powerful, peat smoke, lemon grass, grapefruits, apples, smoked salmon, lapsang souchong tea, licorice, caramel and dash of vanilla salt.
Finish: long, peaty, peppery and salty, with subtle citrusy notes.
