Tamnavulin (the mill on the hill in Gaelic) is fairly new, modern Speyside distillery built in 1966 by Invergordon Distillers Ltd. Since 1993 it has been owned by Whyte & Mackay, one of the leading producers of blended whisky, acquired by Emperador Inc. in 2014. Tamnavulin was mothballed between 1995 and 2007 but currently works at full capacity producing 4 million liters of spirit per annum. Almost entire production goes into Whyte & Mackay blends and the company doesn’t do much to support Tamnavulin brand. Here we have a memorable edition of Tamnavulin 25 years old, part of The Stillman’s Dram range, released for the new Millennium. Only 1800 bottles were produced.
Nose: grassy and slightly peaty, forest floor, pine sap, mixed nuts, almonds, hints of eucalyptus and cinnamon, milk chocolate, grapes and a touch of camphor.
Palate: grassy and nutty, walnuts, roasted almonds, banana bread, apples, hint of cinnamon, lemon pepper, herbal tea and very shy vanilla and toffee notes.
Finish: fairly long, spicy and nutty with notes of pepper, ginger and lemon grass.
