Springbank Distillery has always used a substantial amount of sherry barrels for whisky aging and that type of wood works really well for briny and lightly peated Campbeltown spirit. The 25 years old expression released in 2006 contains whisky aged exclusively in refill sherry butts and bottled at standard Springbank strength of 46% abv. Only 1200 bottles were produced. This classic, “old school” Springbank is now available only on auctions.
Nose: very complex with pretty strong sherry statement, dried apricots, cherries, apples, pears, vanilla, caramel, oak, pepper, tobacco, hints of leather and peat.
Palate: rich and spicy, walnuts, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, pepper, dark chocolate, crème brûlée, prunes, raisins, bitter orange marmalade, oak and a whiff of sea air.
Finish: long, spicy and oaky, with notes of pepper, nutmeg, licorice, cocoa and salted almonds.
