The original Lochnagar Distillery was founded by James Robertson in 1823 and three years later his competitors burnt it to the ground. Robertson established a new one near the mountain Lochnagar but it was also destroyed by fire. Finally in 1845 John Begg built new distillery and named it New Lochnagar. In 1848 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery and immediately awarded it with Royal Warrant. To commemorate the visit to the distillery, Royal Lochnagar annually releases the Selected Reserve expression, a vatting of selected casks (predominantly ex-sherry) usually of 18-20 years of age. The 2007 release limited to 4710 bottles scored silver medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
