The 12 years old Cask Strength releases from Springbank come out once or twice a year and contain whiskies aged in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks. They are extremely popular among whisky aficionados, especially Campbeltown malt lovers. Batch 6 released in 2013 was not exception; it comprised whiskies aged in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks. Springbank has always used a substantial amount of sherry barrels for whisky aging and that type of wood works really well for briny and lightly peated Campbeltown spirit.
Nose: maritime and slightly phenolic, hints of peat smoke and rubber, becoming sweeter with a drop of water, toffee, vanilla, marzipan, baked apples and touch of nougat.
Palate: pretty rich, breakfast cereals, milk chocolate, marzipan, apples, hints of ginger and pepper, touch of peat and a whiff of sea air.
Finish: long, fruity and oaky, with notes of vanilla, toffee and touch of salt.
