The exact date of Jasper Newton (Jack) Daniel cannot be verified since no official document exists to prove it (the courthouse records had been destroyed by fire).
Peter Krass, Jack’s biographer, points to January 1849; he wrote in his book Blood & Whiskey that ‘United States Census and tax records (…) prove that he lived from 1849 to 1911’. The most commonly believed date of Jack’s birth is September 5, 1846. Jack’s mother died shortly after giving birth and is buried on farm, just outside Lynchburg. Although her tombstone has deteriorated the inscription ‘Lucinda Daniel, Died Jan. 29th 1847’ is still readable. Finally there is Brown-Forman Corporation, the brand and distillery owner that believes that Jack was born in September 1850 but the only evidence that supports this date is that it appears on Jack’s tombstone. The day is secondary for Brown-Forman, they celebrate Jack’s birthday for the entire month of September. The limited Birthday edition from 2011 commemorates Jack’s 161st Birthday. Alike the previous year 160th Birthday edition it is presented in black bottle with black label designed by Michael Osborne Design and implemented by Chattanooga Labeling Systems.
