Evan Williams, a Welsh immigrant, is a serious contender to “the First Commercial Kentucky Distiller” title; it is no secret that he set up his distillery on the banks of the Ohio River back in 1783.
Nine years before Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union. Today Heaven Hill Distillery produces his namesake bourbon from mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. Evan Williams is the best selling bourbon from Heaven Hill Distillery portfolio and the third most popular American whiskey, behind Jack Daniel’s and Jim Beam, with annual sales north of 2.3 million cases.
