The Smokehead brand was developed and launched by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2006. The brand has been quite successfully competing with smoky malts such as Finlaggan, Peat Monster or Big Peat.
The High Voltage expression was added to the range in the spring of 2018. Ian Macleod does net reveal, which Islay distillery supplies juice for the brand, just proudly states that “Smokehead has always challenged the traditional whisky world with its unconventional look and attitude, appealing to the younger and adventurous whisky drinker”. Extra Black 18 years old was released in 2010 and remains the oldest expression of Smokehead to date. Only 6000 bottles were produced.
