Tomatin Distillery was founded in 1897. Several expansions carried out from the 1950s to 1970s made it the largest distillery in Scotland but the success was short-lived and in 1985 Tomatin filled for bankruptcy. New lease of life was provided by Japanese capital and the following year the distillery welcomed new owners, Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co. The Japanese downsized the operation and in the new Millennium heavily invested in the brand significantly expanding product range. The 15 years old expression, aged exclusively in white American oak casks, was introduced in August 2009 and remained part of the core range until April 2014. Since 2016 it has been bottled exclusively for Travel Retail.
