The formula of Antiquary blended whisky was developed by the Hardie brothers, John and William, the Edinburgh wine and spirits merchants in 1888. Exactly 60 years later J.&W. Hardie Ltd. was absorbed by DCL and until 1996 remained in their portfolio. Currently the brand is owned by Tomatin Distillery Co. The bottle presented here was filled in our opinion in the late 20th Century. Its formula consists of about 30 components with over 50% being malt whiskies. The key malts are: Glenrothes, Mortlach, Linkwood, Cragganmore, Clynelish, Glenkinchie, Tomatin and Bowmore, while grain comes from Cameronbridge and Port Dundas. Both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks were used in maturation process.
Nose: fresh and fruity, malted barley, apples, plums, oranges, lemons, butterscotch, vanilla, hay and faint hint of smoke.
Palate: smooth, breakfast cereals, vanilla, caramel, honey, peaches, apples, oranges, hint of lemon grass and delicate oaky notes.
Finish: medium long, with notes of toffee, dark chocolate, dash of pepper, oak and touch of peat.
