Glen Elgin Distillery, founded in 1898, sits in the heart of Speyside, south of the town of Elgin.
The 2012 modernization increased its annual distilling capacity to 2.7 million liters. Most of the annual output goes into White Horse blends and the distillery core range includes only 12 years old expression. The 16 years old Cask Strength bottling was released in 2008 as a part of Diageo Special Releases. It contains whisky aged in European oak barrels, only 9954 bottles were produced.
Nose: rich and deep, dried apricots and figs, prunes, orange zest, vanilla, butterscotch, almonds, traces of cedar wood and sulphur.
Palate: nicely balanced, dark chocolate with orange peel, raisins, sweet cereals, honey roasted nuts, vanilla, hints of cedar wood, aniseed and nutmeg.
Finish: fairly long, nutty, almonds, dark chocolate and oak.
