Springbank has always been doing things own way, regardless the market conditions.
Even now, when demand for whisky remains all time high and new distilleries are constructed all over the world Springbank operates at roughly 20% of its modest capacity producing 150 000 liters of spirit per annum. On the other hand it is the only distillery in Scotland, which carries out the entire production process, from malting to bottling, on site. The 15 years old expression was part of the range until the mid 1990s and re-launched in 2002. The whisky is aged solely in ex-sherry casks and bottled at “regular” Springbank strength 46% abv.
Nose: rich, brown sugar, dark chocolate, raisins, almonds, Christmas cake, honey, dried figs and prunes, hints of leather and a whiff of smoke.
Palate: lots of dark chocolate, vanilla and marzipan, raisins, figs, hazelnuts, bitter orange marmalade, grapefruits, pepper, traces of oak and peat.
Finish: long, with notes of sherry, bitter chocolate, dried fruit, hints of leather and oak.
