In the late 20th Century Macallan was widely cherished for big sherried whisky. The distillery even claimed employing exclusively sherry wood for maturation.
In 2004 however, The Edrington Group, Macallan’s parent company, launched multi million-dollar campaign for Fine Oak series, range of Macallan single malts aged in combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The Macallan purists expressed their disappointment, while most of the whisky drinkers approached new range with confidence. All in all, Fine Oak series established itself rather well, giving different perspective for the Macallan malt. The 15 years old expression is aged in Spanish oak seasoned with sherry and American oak seasoned with bourbon and with sherry.
