Hazelburn has been distilled since 1997 and is one three different single malt whiskies produced regularly at Springbank Distillery.
Despite huge demand for single malt whisky the distillery uses roughly 20% of its modest capacity of 750000 liters of spirit per annum. The production is split between 3 brands – 80% Springbank, 10% Longrow and 10% Hazelburn. The latter debuted in 2005 as 8 years old; it is a triple distilled, totally unpeated whisky aged mainly in ex-bourbon casks and named after neighboring distillery, which operated from 1825 to 1925.
Nose: soft and mild, vanilla, caramel, white peaches, bananas, fresh pineapple, lemon peel, fading aroma of dried flowers and hints of oak.
Palate: malty, slightly briny and mineral, breakfast cereals, vanilla, apples, grapes, lemon grass and green oak.
Finish: medium long, oaky and slightly nutty with a touch of sulphur.
