However Caol Ila distills from rather heavily peated malt (with concentration of phenols 30-35 ppm), since 1998 does several runs a year from completely unpeated malt. In fact, in recent years about 25% of the new-make is unpeated.
The 8 years old expression was long awaited non-peated Caol Ila, launched in 2006 as a supplement to the official range. The whisky was aged in ex-bourbon casks, mainly first fill, bottled at natural strength of 59.8% abv with an outrun of 12 990 bottles.
Nose: fresh and slightly alcoholic, grassy, fruity, apples, lemons, gooseberries, sea breeze and vanilla.
Palate: quite powerful, clean, lemon and orange zest, pineapple, vanilla, caramel, oak and a few grains of sea salt.
Finish: medium long, citrusy and briny with the trace of oak.
