The word “Bowmore” derives from Gaelic “Bogh Mòr” and means “great sea reef”.
It is a name of the administrative capital of the Isle of Islay (in fact a village inhabited by less than 1000 residents) as well as the oldest working distillery (established 1779). Bowmore 17 years old was introduced in the late 1980s and has been considered by many as the best standard bottling of Bowmore. In 2014 it was replaced with White Sands, also 17 years old but aged exclusively in ex-bourbon casks. Bowmore Distillery is currently owned by Beam Suntory and equipped with two pairs of stills produces 2 million liters of spirit annually. Bowmore is the third most popular Islay single malt behind Laphroaig and Lagavulin (2 million bottles sold in 2017).
