After being mothballed for three years, in 2004 BenRiach Distillery welcomed new owners, Intra Trading Company.
The maturing stock was part of the sale. Between 1977 and 2001 the distillery owners (Chivas Bros then part of Seagram) used it mainly as a research lab. They were experimenting with different malts, distilling methods and different types of wood. Curiositas was introduced in 2004 and currently is part of the distillery core range. It is unusually peated whisky, distilled from malt with the concentration of phenols over 50 ppm.
Nose: explosion of aromas – peat, honey, citrus, lemon zest cacao and oak.
Palate: quite complex, a combination of sweet peat, fresh fruit, honeydew melon and peach, nuts, oak and spice.
Finish: long and lingering, peaty with a traces of prunes and sweet oats.
