John Dewar established his company in Perth in 1846. He started experimenting with blends in the early 1860s, what makes him a pioneer of the industry. The Dewar brand was registered in 1891, eleven years after John’s death, and in few years took off globally. Dewar’s has been no. 1 selling Scotch in the States for decades however in recent years it’s global sales have been struggling a bit (2.8 million cases sold in 2016). Bacardi purchased the brand from Diageo in 1998 and in the next few years time significantly expanded the range. In the early 2000s new expressions were introduced including 18 years old Founders Reserve. The key components of the blend are Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie and Royal Brackla and lo lesser extend Macduff. After the blend is created it spends a period of time in specially selected casks to achieve perfect harmony.
