Knappogue Castle is a brainchild of Mark Andrews III, founder of Great Spirits Company in Houston, Texas and big admirer of Irish whiskey. In the 1960s his father Mark Edwin Andrews bought and renovated the 15th Century Knappogue Castle, in County Clare. (Mark Edwin Andrews was a Navy officer, Assistant Secretary under president Truman, who enjoyed lucrative post-naval career in the oil business). He also kept buying barrels of whiskey, which he later bottled and distributed among locals, the family and friends. Knappogue Castle 1995 Special Reserve comprises whiskey distilled in Old Bushmills Distillery and aged in ex-bourbon casks. (We understand that Vintages 1991-1993 contained spirit from Colley Distillery, and 1994 forward from Old Bushmills).
