Rye whiskey category suffered terrible decline in the late 20th Century.
Lack in demand matched lack in supply and just three commercial distilleries (Jim Beam, Heaven Hill and Wild Turkey) kept the category alive, distilling from rye mash a couple of days a year. The new Millennium reversed rye’s fortune; unfortunately it took distilleries few years to build equivalent inventory. Wild Turkey Straight Rye is a perfect example of classic rye whiskey. It is distilled from mash of 51% rye, 37% corn and 12% malted barley and bottled at 81 US Proof (40.5% abv). Annual sales of the Wild Turkey brand, including Wild Turkey American Honey, crossed 1.5 million cases in 2017.
