Springbank, founded 1828, is the 14th licensed distillery in Campbeltown, the once proclaimed ‘whisky capital of the world’.
Despite tremendous demand for single malt whisky and despair of Campbeltown whisky enthusiasts, Springbank operates at a little over 20% of its modest capacity producing about 175,000 liters of spirit per annum (2018). Here we have one of many ‘private bottlings’ from the distillery – whisky distilled in 1992 and aged in ex-bourbon hogshead # 248 for 21 years. Bottled at natural strength of 51.9% abv for Dion Gunson of Gunson Fine Wines Ltd. with an outrun of 150 bottles. A label and fact book were designed and drawn by Scottish artist Chris Watson.
Nose: malty and mildly peaty, sweet cereals, vanilla, honey, sugared peanuts, apples, orange peel, dash of sea salt, moist hay and oak.
Palate: fruity and slightly briny, oranges, nectarines, cantaloupe, figs, salted caramel, vanilla, lemon pepper, touch of licorice and distant whiff of smoke.
Finish: pretty long, with notes of sweet cereals, fresh fruits, vanilla, sea salt, oak and peat smoke lingering in the background.
