The Johnnie Walker brand doesn’t need any introductions; with annual sales of 18.3 million cases (2017) it is by far the most popular blended Scotch whisky responsible for 21.7% market share of the entire category.
The brand continuous to grow and expand and every year Diageo (the brand’s owner) follows the market trends and keeps adding new expressions to the range. Black Label Sherry Edition was launched in the summer of 2018 and emphasizes greater proportion of ex-sherry casks. The official press releases does not mention ‘finishing maturation’ but indicates that components have been aged in sherry wood for the minimum of 12 years and then blended together. The key malt components in the formula are Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill.
Nose: very fresh, raspberries, red currants, cherries, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, cloves, touch of nutmeg and faint hint of smoke.
Palate: delicate sherry notes, strawberries, raspberry jam, vanilla cream, butter cookies, white pepper, dash of cinnamon and oak tannins.
Finish: fairly long and spicy, with notes of vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, hints of red berries and distant whiff of smoke.
