With annual sales of 7.8 million cases (2018) Hennessy is by far the best selling cognac brand (second in line, Martell sells 2.6 million cases).
The company was founded by Richard Hennessy in 1765 and currently is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy (LVMH). Hennessy Black, the company’s first new product on large scale, was launched in 2009. It was created with the American customer in mind and is recommended to be served mainly with mixers and used in cocktails. Black is a vatting of 45 different eaux-de-vie “aged in barrels used by Hennessy for at least five years”. Such statement applies to barrels, which are at least five years old, not to eaux-de-vie, which by law has to spent a minimum of two years in French oak barrels to fall into the cognac category.
