Douglas Laing & Co., one of the most reputable independent bottling companies, used to be run by two Laing brothers, Stewart and Fred.
In 2013, after almost 40 years of working together, the brothers parted their ways and split the old company portfolio. Old Malt Cask, Douglas Laing’s signature series, is now part of the newly formed Hunter Laing & Co with Stewart at the helm. Macduff 21 years old distilled in December 1991 was aged in refill hogshead no. HL 9909. Bottled at 50% abv and unchill-filtered in August 2013 with an outrun of 262 bottles. Macduff Distillery is owned by Bacardi Ltd. and equipped with five stills produces 3.4 million liters of spirit per annum, most of which goes into William Lawson’s blends.
Nose: pretty sweet, apples, pears, vanilla, honey, milk chocolate, caramel, sultanas, dash of pepper and aniseed and touch of oak.
Palate: vanilla, honey, buttered toast, green apples, orange peel, lemon cake, hints of grass and oak and dash of black pepper.
Finish: medium long, with notes of vanilla, caramel, toffee, apples, pepper, touch of fennel and oak.
