
Douglas Laing & Co., one of the most reputable independent bottling companies, used to be run by two Laing brothers, Stewart and Fred. In 2013, after almost 40 years of working together, the brothers parted their ways and split the old company portfolio.
Old Malt Cask, Douglas Laing’s signature series, is now part of the newly formed Hunter Laing & Co with Stewart at the helm. Auchentoshan 16 years old presented here was distilled in October 1997 and aged in refill hogshead no. HL 10739. Bottled at 50% abv and unchill-filtered in July 2014 with an outrun of 299 bottles. Auchentoshan is the only Scottish distillery doing 100% triple distillation. In the last two years the brand sales rose by 60% to reach 1.4 million bottles in 2017.
Nose: bunch of wild flowers, vanilla, butterscotch, buttered toast, apples, pears, blackberries, lemon grass, touch of pine needles and oak.
Palate: vanilla cream, toffee, brown sugar, peaches, mango, pineapples, butter cookies, cappuccino, hints of hay and oak.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of vanilla, toffee, citrus, dash of allspice and oak.
