Tobermory Distillery is beautifully located on the Inner Hebridean island of Mull. It was founded in 1798 but became fully operational in 1823. Its name derives from the Gaelic ‘Tobar Mhoire’ meaning Mary’s Well.
In ancient times a well dedicated to Virgin Mary was located at settlement of Tobermory, now capital (population about 900 souls) of the Isle of Mull. In March 2017 the distillery ceased production for a substantial upgrade, which included stills replacement and major work on a visitor’s center. The project was completed two years later and about the same time the Tobermory 12 years old replaced 10 years old as a signature expression of the distillery. The whisky was aged exclusively in white American oak barrels and bottled without chill-filtration at 46.3% abv.
