Springbank 12 years old Cask Strength was introduced in 2010 and has been released twice a year ever since.
It is a vatting of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks bottled of natural color and without chill-filtration. These semi-annual releases are extremely popular among whisky aficionados, especially Campbeltown malt lovers. Batch 18 was released on December 11, 2018 and it is a combination of 50% sherry cask and 50% bourbon casks. Springbank has always used substantial amount of ex-sherry casks for whisky aging and that type of wood works really well for briny and lightly peated Campbeltown malt.
Nose: maritime and mineral, sea breeze, green apples, apricots, bananas, raisins, almonds, vanilla, white pepper, hints of engine oil and peat.
Palate: mildly peaty and nicely balanced, vanilla, toffee, marzipan, nougat, banana bread, apples, pepper, sea salt, hints of ginger and lemon grass.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of vanilla, apples, orange peel, milk chocolate, licorice, dash of mixed spice and distant whiff of smoke.
