Glengyle Distillery was founded by William Mitchell in Campbeltown and operated from 1872 to 1925.
Over 75 years later Hedley Wright, the chairman of J&A Mitchell & Co. (the owners of Springbank) and great-great nephew of William Mitchell bought the old buildings and in 2004 made the re-opening of Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery a reality. Single malt produced there has been released under Kilkerran brand since 2009. In 2019 the company launched Kilkerran Heavily Peated as a forerunner to Peat in Progress series. Whisky was distilled from barley malted to phenols’ content of 84ppm and aged in combination of ex-bourbon (55%) and ex-sherry (45%) casks for a little over three years. Bottled at natural strength of 59.3% abv with an outrun of 9000 bottles.
