Port Ellen and Brora have always been a highlights of the Diageo Special Releases. Each year we hear rumors that there will be no more bottlings from these cult distilleries and so far life proves them wrong.
The recent press release confirming that Brora and Port Ellen will be brought back to life and re-start distillation in 2020 created tsunami of excitement but for now only a lucky few can enjoy these wonderful malts. We are proud to present the 17th edition of Port Ellen, part of 2017 Diageo’s Special Releases. The whisky distilled in 1979 spent 37 years in refill American oak hogsheads and was bottled at natural strength of 51% abv. Only 2988 bottles were produced.
Nose: pretty complex, moist grassy dunes, spring meadow, lemons, pears, honey, cinnamon, white pepper, candle wax and whiffs of peat smoke.
Palate: slightly oily, peaches, oranges, apples, toasted almonds, dark chocolate, smoked meats, hay, bunch of dried herbs, touch of leather and peat smoke.
Finish: long and pretty smoky, apples, grapes, cocoa powder, white pepper, hay and charred oak.
