Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Straight Rye is the company fourth rye release in five years and permanent addition to the core range. They started in 2012 with Unaged Rye followed by Rested Rye in 2014 and Single Barrel Rye in 2016.
The whiskey is distilled from mash of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley using the same cave spring water from Jack Daniel’s Hollow. It also goes through charcoal mellowing process and is aged in new charred white American oak barrels. Jack Daniel’s rye is aged in the upper floors of the warehouse to expedite maturation process. The whiskey carries no age statement but according to the company sources it was aged for about 5 years.
Nose: sweet, bananas, cherries, chocolate chip cookies, vanilla custard, charred oak, hay and just a hint of rye spice.
Palate: fruity and spicy, bananas, Rainier cherries, sweet cereals, marshmallows, white pepper, dash of cinnamon and notes of charred oak.
Finish: medium long, combination of banana bread, mixed spice and oak.
