In the late 2017 Glengoyne Distillery unveiled a new range of whisky, Spirit of Oak Collection, exclusively for Travel Retail.
The new range emphases sherry wood and time required to create Sherry Cask expression of Glengoyne. It can takes up to six years before these casks would reach the distillery – first the oak is harvested from the forests of northern Spain or southern United States and shipped to cooperage in Spain. After arrival the oak cut in staves is air-dried, crafted into casks and filled with sherry for up to three years, and then sent to Glengoyne Distillery. Glengoyne Balbaína (Balbaína is the area in Andalusia) is aged in first fill Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 43% abv.
Nose: pretty spicy, cloves, cinnamon, raisins, maple syrup, caramel, apple pie and hints of cocoa powder.
Palate: rich sherry notes, raisins, dried apples, prunes, brown sugar, toffee, hints of cinnamon and oak.
Finish: fairly long and spicy, pepper, cloves, allspice, sherried oak and subtle citrusy note.
