In 2016 Billy Walker sold BenRiach Distillery Company (BenRiach, GlenDronach and GlenGlassaugh distilleries) and immediately started looking for new challenges.
His purchase of Glenallachie distillery in July 2017 surprised many, mostly because of its big capacity of 4 million liters of spirit per annum. GlenAllachie is fairly young distillery, built in 1968 has supplied malt whisky for Pernod Ricard brands, mainly Clan Campbell, Passport and 100 Pipers. In the spring of 2018, to commemorate the distillery 50th Anniversary, the owners launched six single cask expressions ranging from 1978 to 1991 and bottled at natural strength. Here we have whisky from ex-sherry butt no. 2515 filled on May 8, 1990; the cask produced 484 bottles.
Nose: strong sherry notes, ripe plums and cherries, candied lemon peel, caned pineapple, toffee, overdone toast, polished leather and touch of hay.
Palate: smooth, peaches, greengages, oranges, sultanas, honey, chocolate-coated hazelnuts, hints of hay and allspice and little oak.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of dried fruits, orange peel, cocoa powder, licorice and oak.
