Springbank, founded in 1828 on the site of an illicit still, is arguably the most unique Scottish distillery.
It has been owned by the Mitchell family since 1837, what makes it the longest family owned distillery in Scotland. In the 21st Century the entire production process, from malting to bottling, is completed on site (no other distillery can make such claim). The 25 years old expression returned to the range in 2014 as a limited yearly release. The 2018 bottling has been crafted using exclusively refill sherry casks; the whisky was bottled at 46% abv and without chill-filtration with an outrun of 1200 bottles. (Producer’s tasting notes.)
Nose: typical Springbank, damp hessian cloth with notes of flint followed by treacle, traditional Highland toffee, marzipan, nougat and toasted oak.
Palate: perfectly balanced, silky and smooth; forest fruits and toasted marshmallows are prominent then pecan and walnuts; cotton candy, butterscotch and orange peel.
Finish: oily and fruity; treacle as the nose suggests with tobacco leaf, citrus fruits then salty and briny notes.
