Bunnahabhain 40 years old debuted in 2012, a limited edition of 750 bottles with the label designed by renowned illustrator Iain McIntosh.
The story goes that the whisky was a discovery of Ian MacMillan, Bunnahabhain master distiller, who came across it in the distillery ledgers. Five years later another bottling of 40 years old was introduced, this time bottled at slightly higher abv (41.9% instead of 41.7%) with an outrun of 1000 bottles. Such old whiskies are extremely rare now; the Bunnahabhain presented here was distilled in mid to late 1970s, when the distillery was owned by Highland Distillers Co. (Official tasting note.)
