The Famous Grouse is one of the most popular Scotch whisky brands with annual sales of about 3 million cases. The brand debuted in 1896 under The Grouse name, the word “Famous” was added in 1905.
The key components of the blend are Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes with the addition of Tamdhu, Glengoyne and Bunnahabhain. Currently the brand is owned by the Edrington Group and remains the best selling blend in Scotland. The 12 years old Gold Reserve was introduced in the late 1990s and contains high proportion of malt whiskies.
Nose: smooth, freshly baked bread, vanilla, honey, apples, pears, peaches, some oak and fading hints of smoke.
Palate: soft and sweet, vanilla, toffee, caramel, sweet cereals, grapefruits, baked apples, dark chocolate and delicate oaky bitterness.
Finish: medium long, with notes of orchard fruit, toffee, cocoa powder, oak and distant whiff of smoke.
