Ben Nevis, founded 1825, is a medium size distillery with capacity of roughly 2 million liters of spirit per annum.
In 1989, after being mothballed for three years, it was acquired by Nikka Distilling Company and resumed production the following year. Ben Nevis is a major whisky supplier for Nikka blends, more than 30% of the new-make is shipped to Japan. The 26 years old expression, part of Signatory Cask Strength Collection, comprises whisky distilled on July 5, 1991 and aged in ex-sherry butt no. 2378. Bottled at natural strength of 56.5% abv and without chill-filtration on July 20, 2017 with an outrun of 598 bottles.
Nose: distinctive sherry notes, dark chocolate, espresso, caramel, bitter orange marmalade, roasted almonds, touch of leather, oak and fading hint of smoke.
Palate: rich, dark chocolate, raspberry mousse, toffee, overdone toast, raisins, dried figs, tobacco, dash of nutmeg and pretty strong oaky notes.
Finish: pretty long, with notes of dark chocolate, summer berries, tobacco, cedar wood and distant whiff of smoke.
