In 1999 Edrington Company, then owners of Bunnahabhain, mothballed the distillery allowing for a few weeks production a year.
The change of fortune came in 2003, when Burn Stewart Distillers acquired the distillery and immediately resumed production. In 2010 the Bunnahabhain owners made two remarkable changes to their core range – they quit chill-filtration and increased alcohol content to 46.3% abv. Almost immediately the 25 years old expression, which debuted in 2005 scored double gold medal at San Francisco Wine and Spirit Competition, in fact between 2011 and 2016 it was awarded with three gold medals and one silver. In 2017 the company redesigned the label and started bottling 25 years old expression as Small Batch.
