The story of Bacardí, the world’s largest private spirits company, dates back to 1862.
It was then that Facundo Bacardí Massó, together with his brother José, started the Santiago de Cuba Distillery. The attic of the old building was inhabited by bats, whose image soon became the symbol of the brand. In view of the widespread lack of writing or reading skills in the 19th century, the bat in the Bacardí logo became an important element of the brand’s recognisability. When the communist revolution broke out in Cuba, the Bacardí family opposed Fidel Castro’s dictatorship. Their Cuban assets were confiscated in October 1960. Expecting what was coming, they had managed to move some of it, including recipes, trademark ownership and such, to the Bahamas, and build distilleries in Porto Rico and Mexico. Finally, the company headquarters were established in Hamilton on the Bahamas in 1965, and its main production works in Porto Rican Cataño.
Bacardí Dragonberry is one of a series of flavoured rums. It is a mixture of the classic white Bacardí rum and natural extracts of dragon fruit (pitaya) and strawberries. As a result, its bouquet offers notes of strawberries and dragon fruit, and some vanilla.
