Lagavulin 16 years old was included in the original Classic Malts series launched by United Distillers in 1988.
Ten years later Classic Malts were supplemented with Distillers Edition containing the same whiskies but finished in various types of wood. Lagavulin’s choice were ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, what created an intriguing combination of peaty smokiness and sweet sherry notes. Lagavulin 2001 Vintage was part of the 2017 Distillers Edition release.
Nose: nice combination of peat smoke, sweet sherry and dried herbs, touch of iodine, dark chocolate, espresso, prunes and hints of tobacco.
Palate: nicely balanced, peat smoke, oranges, raisins, prunes, dark chocolate, black tea, dash of pepper and delicate notes of oak and tobacco.
Finish: fairly long, smoky and fruity, with notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, almonds and just a pinch of salt.
