Japanese whisky has been on fire in the last several years with producers facing serious inventory shortages. There are two big whisky producers in Japan, Suntory and Nikka and they are both far from supplying enough whisky to meet growing demand.
In the fall of 2017 Nikka unveiled four limited editions (3500 bottles of each expression) of Yoichi and Miyagikyo finished in ex-Moscatel and ex-Rum casks. While the former was reserved to the domestic market, the latter destined for Europe and America.
Yoichi Rum Cask offers moderate peatiness, slightly medicinal and herbaceous notes combined with exotic fruitiness, bananas, pineapples, coconuts and beautifully integrated notes of ginger, cinnamon and cloves.
Miyagikyo Rum Cask brings fruity and floral notes, pineapple, mango, geranium, lots of brown sugar, vanilla and cinnamon, hints of candied ginger, milk chocolate and almonds.
