Glenrothes located in Speyside is a big distillery with capacity of 5.6 million liters of spirit per annum.
The vast majority of the output goes into blends, especially Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse, with only fraction being reserved for single malt releases. Glenrothes’ status is little odd, The Edrington Group owns and operates the distillery, while Berry Bros. & Rudd own the brand and market it by vintage rather than by age. Glenrothes 1972 Vintage bottled 1996 is a magnificent, over 20 years old whisky, aged in European oak, classic old-school Speysider impossible to find today. Whisky to be served during long winter nights, with oak logs burning in the fireplace.
Nose: extremely rich and fruity, oranges, bananas, cherries, notes of old leather and polished wood, cinnamon, pepper, coffee beans and touch of shoe polish.
Palate: big and complex, cherries, oranges, raisins, caramel, dark chocolate, honey, nutmeg, pepper, sherried oak and fading hint of smoke.
Finish: very long, extension to palate, beautiful balance between fruit, spice and wood.
