The 12 years old Cask Strength releases from Springbank come out once or twice a year and contain whiskies aged in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks. They are extremely popular among whisky aficionados, especially Campbeltown malt lovers. Batch 13 was released on July 26, 2016 and it is a combination 70% sherry and 30% bourbon casks. Springbank has always used a substantial amount of sherry barrels for whisky aging and that type of wood works really well for briny and lightly peated Campbeltown spirit.
Nose: quite strong sherry statement, hazelnuts, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, bitter orange marmalade, mango, dried cranberries and hints of peat.
Palate: rich and fruity, raspberries, cherries, oranges, raisins, crème brûlée, some cocoa, dash of salt and pepper and trace of peat.
Finish: long with notes of cranberry relish, bitter oranges, chocolate, caramel and touch of peat.
