It is hard to believe, but one of our favorite whiskies will soon celebrate its 20th Anniversary. Aberlour a’bunadh was introduced in 1997 and for the first couple of years remained Travel Retail exclusive. The name a’bunadh means “the origins” in Gaelic and the whisky is matured exclusively in sherry wood, with an emphasis on second fill ex-Oloroso butts, and bottled always uncut and unchill-filtered. The batches vary slightly, sometimes they are fruitier, sometimes spicier, but overall they have been pretty consistent. Batch # 56 was released in June, 2016.
Nose: rich, milk chocolate, dried fruits, Christmas cake, almonds and hazelnuts, raisins, candied orange peel and hints of old leather.
Palate: heavily sherried, prunes, dried figs and dates, raisins, chocolate truffles, black pepper, dried herbs and touch of cedar wood.
Finish: long, with notes of sherry, dark chocolate, coffee beans and dash of pepper.
