Bunnahabhain, the lesser-known Islay distillery, has been producing whisky since 1881. It is currently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, subsidiary of South African Distell Group. Sales of Bunnahabhain single malt have doubled within last five years but they are still far behind powerful brands such as Laphroaig or Lagavulin. Wm Cadenhead & Co. small batch expression contains whisky distilled in 2005 and aged in two ex-bourbon casks for 10 years. Bottled at 46% abv with an outrun of 540 bottles. Wm Cadenhead & Co. was established in 1842 and remains the oldest Scottish Independent Bottler.
Nose: light with lots of vanilla and toffee notes, brown sugar, toasted bread, apples, grapes, seaweed, touch of dried herbs and fading hints of smoke.
Palate: smooth, sweet and spicy, vanilla ice cream, oranges, grapefruits, pepper, dash of ginger, notes of sea breeze and charred oak.
Finish: medium long, salty and ashy with hints of vanilla and milk chocolate.
