Mortlach Distillery entered the new Millennium as a serious contender to “the Speyside best kept secret” competition. Until the early 1990s, due to lack of official bottlings, Mortlach single malt was known only to whisky aficionados. Things changed with an excellent 16 years old Flora & Fauna expression, arguably the brightest star in that range. Gordon & MacPhail has been releasing Mortlach under license as part of the Distillery Labels range (each whisky included in that range has its own unique label). The 21 years old expression contains whisky aged solely in refill sherry casks.
Nose: sweet and fruity, with delicate sherry notes, honey, vanilla, raisins, bananas, apples, pears, touches of cinnamon and nutmeg and fading hint of smoke.
Palate: nicely balanced, vanilla custard, nougat, honey, crème brûlée, raisins, prunes, nutmeg, candied ginger, touch of aniseed and just a whisper of smoke.
Finish: fairly long and on a spice side, with notes of sherry, dried fruit and distant whiff of smoke.
