Every year Benromach Distillery supplements its product range with wood finishes. For 2016 the company prepared three – Hermitage, Château Cissac and Sassicaia. Sassicaia is a famous single estate (Tenuta San Guido) rich Tuscan wine often called Super Tuscan. It is made using predominantly Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties. Benromach Sassicaia Wood Finish comprises whisky distilled in 2007, aged mainly in first fill bourbon barrels and finished for two years in ex-Sassicaia casks. Bottled at 45% abv with an outrun of 3500 bottles.
Nose: rich and fruity, ripe berries, raisins, milk chocolate, caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, hints of cinnamon and ginger and distant whiff of smoke.
Palate: mildly smoky, mixed berries marmalade, vanilla cream, toffee, honey, candied orange peel, white pepper, touch of cinnamon and oak.
Finish: fairly long, mixed berries, caramel, honey, hints of oak and peat smoke.
