However Speyside is not renowned for heavily peated whiskies Benromach Distillery has been experimenting with them for a while. The original release of Peat Smoke hit the market in 2007 and it was a great success. In recent years Benromach has been producing just one batch of peated spirit per year using barley malted up to 67 ppm phenols, which is higher than Laphroaig and Lagavulin. So was the case of 2007 Vintage, whisky aged exclusively in first fill bourbon casks and bottled in 2016 without chill-filtration. Benromach Distillery is owned by Gordon & MacPhail and after recent upgrades can produce close to 700 000 liters of spirit per annum.
