Benromach, the smallest distillery in Speyside, sits on the outskirts of Forres. The recent upgrades increased its capacity by 40%, to 700 000 liters per annum. Since 1993 the distillery has been operating under the ownership of Gordon & MacPhail, the leading independent whisky bottling company. Benromach 15 years old was a 2015 addition to the core range described by the owners as ‘the whisky for those who would like to see what a classic pre-1960s Speyside malt is like’. While its 10 years old sibling is a vatting of 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry casks, the 15 years old was mainly matured in ex-sherry casks, some of which have been heavily charred.
Nose: very rich, strong sherry influence, vanilla, candied orange peel, dried dates, chamomile tea, walnuts, candied ginger, hints of nutmeg and cinnamon.
Palate: lots of dried fruits, prunes, figs and dates, raisins, vanilla, walnuts, milk chocolate, pepper, charred oak and distant hint of smoke.
Finish: long, raisins, caramel, orange peel, cocoa and fading whiff of smoke.
