Big Peat is a remarkable marriage of single malt whiskies sourced from the Islay distilleries. The brand was launched by Douglas Laing & Co. in 2009 and its formula includes four main components – Caol Ila, Ardbeg, Bowmore and Port Ellen – representing ‘all that is Islay in one bottle’. According to Fred Laing ‘there are a couple of blender’s secrets in Big Peat’, which won’t be revealed. The Diplomat’s Edition was released in 2016 and we certainly love the label featuring cranky looking individual dressed in a pinstripe suit and posing perhaps as Brand Ambassador(?). It is a small batch whisky bottled at 46% abv of natural color and without chill-filtration.
Nose: fresh, smoky and maritime, seaweed, honey, vanilla, apples, gooseberries, lemons and hint of furniture polish.
Palate: smoky and ashy, sea breeze, smoked bacon, white pepper, ginger, honey, toffee, baked apples and touch of oak.
Finish: long, smoky and salty with hints of licorice and dark chocolate.
