Arran is one of the very few privately owned Scottish distilleries. Founded in 1993 it started production in August 1995. The total production capacity of 750000 liters of spirit per annum has never been reached but the owners plan to install additional two stills in 2016. Arran whisky has been very successful in recent years, the solid core range has been systematically supplemented with a lot of single casks bottlings as well as remarkable (and sometimes very unusual) wood finishes. The newest addition (Spring 2016) to the core range is 18 years old expression. The whisky was matured in ex-sherry casks and is bottled un-chillfiltered at 46% abv.
Nose: sweet and nicely balanced, baked apples, oranges, vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, hints of cinnamon and ginger, hay barn and toasted oak.
Palate: soft, malty and fruity, apples, apricots, mango, pineapple, raisins, vanilla, candied ginger, dark chocolate and delicate nutty and oaky notes.
Finish: fairly long, fresh orchard fruits, citrus, walnuts and lingering oakiness.
